[Webinar] Student tracking and reporting: understand your students’ reading progress

How can you tell whether a student is reading fluently, understanding the story and making steady progress? In this webinar, we present Fiction Express’s new student tracking and reporting system, designed to provide a clearer, competency-based and more comprehensive view of students’ reading behaviour.

📊 Turning data into informed decisions

The new reporting system combines data recorded during reading with processed metrics that make the information easier to interpret.

The data analysed include:

  • Reading time.
  • Words read per minute.
  • Pages completed.
  • Interruptions during reading.
  • Glossary consultations.
  • Votes.
  • Quiz results.
  • Forum comments and book reviews.
  • Challenges completed in the English programmes.

Fiction Express uses this information to generate indicators that help teachers better understand each student’s progress and needs.

🚦 A visual assessment system

The results are presented using a traffic-light system that helps teachers quickly identify when an indicator may require further attention:

  • Green: a result above 75%.
  • Yellow: a result between 50% and 75%.
  • Red: a result below 50%.
  • Grey: there is not yet enough data.

These colours do not replace the teacher’s professional judgement. They help identify patterns and highlight cases that may need to be reviewed in greater detail.

📖 Reading fluency: pace and consistency

One of the main new features is the assessment of reading fluency, calculated using two indicators:

  • Pace: analyses reading speed according to the level of the book.
  • Consistency: shows whether the student maintains a steady pace throughout the reading.

Reading too quickly may indicate that a student is turning pages without fully understanding the text. An excessively slow pace may point to difficulties related to the level, the language or concentration.

The platform combines these indicators to provide a more accurate view of reading behaviour.

🎯 Which skills can be analysed?

The new reporting system organises the information into different areas:

  • Reading ability: combines pace, consistency and interruptions.
  • Reading comprehension: calculated using the average score from completed quizzes.
  • Written expression: based on the teacher’s assessment of forum comments and book reviews.
  • Use of English: in ELT programmes, this includes the results of listening, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation challenges.

Quizzes or challenges that have not been completed are not counted as zero. The average is calculated using completed activities only.

👩‍🏫 Tracking by chapter and by student

From Class tracking, teachers can view the information from two different perspectives:

By chapter

This view analyses students’ performance in active books and shows:

  • Time spent reading.
  • Reading fluency.
  • Interruptions and glossary consultations.
  • Votes.
  • Quiz results.
  • Comments, book reviews and challenges.

By student

This view provides cumulative information from all the books completed during the school year, including both Live Books and library books.

It allows teachers to monitor each student’s development and view their overall performance in reading ability, comprehension, written expression and, in ELT programmes, Use of English.

✍️ Assessment and feedback from one screen

The new tracking system also makes it easier to review activities. From the same dashboard, teachers can open the following in a new tab:

  • Forum comments.
  • Book reviews.
  • Challenges.

This makes it possible to review and assess students’ answers and provide feedback without moving between different sections of the platform.

📥 Exporting reports to Excel

To explore the information in greater detail:

  1. Go to Class tracking.
  2. Select the class and books you want to analyse.
  3. Click Export data.
  4. Download the report as an Excel file.

The file includes formulas and indicators such as:

  • Reading status and time.
  • Words read per minute.
  • Pace, consistency and fluency.
  • Number of pages completed.
  • Interruptions and glossary consultations.
  • Completed quizzes and average scores.
  • Pages consulted while the quiz was open.
  • Assessed comments and book reviews.
  • Completed audio recordings and votes.
  • Challenge results in the English programmes.

Teachers can also add scores from activities completed on paper. These results will then be automatically included in the average calculation.

🌱 How does the new reporting system support teachers?

This new approach to student tracking makes it possible to:

  • Identify potential difficulties at an early stage.
  • Monitor progress throughout the school year.
  • Identify reading behaviours that require attention.
  • Assess completed activities only.
  • Provide faster and more personalised feedback.
  • Make evidence-informed teaching decisions.
  • Develop students’ overall language competence.
